I’ve read his risala. He mentions evidences for both sides but he doesn’t give a final verdict on whether he was an angel or a Jin. Whose opinion is considered in this matter the mufasirun or the mutkalimun.
It seems that the majority of classical scholars say that iblis was an angel before turning into a jinn. However majority of contemporary scholars deny this and say he was a jinn. What’s the correct opinion? Here’s some scans which say that he was an angel: Qurtubi
